This Week at WBF

A Message from Pastor Bill

Chapter 5 of John’s Gospel presents another shift in time and place. Jesus returns to Jerusalem from Galilee for one of the Jewish feasts which is not identified, therefore we don’t know for sure how long His Galilean ministry lasted. He encounters an invalid who had been so for 38 years and heals him. Because the healing took place on a Sabbath and Jesus told him to take up his pallet and walk, this was construed as work by the religious leaders which was forbidden according to their interpretation of Moses' law. There are several subjects of interest here and so we will probably take more than one Sunday to cover them. The encounter and ensuing Sabbath issue covers the entire chapter. This week we will look at the “2nd act” of this 3 act play which is the accusation of wrong doing by the Religious Leaders. Jesus had little regard for their “traditions of men” because they had become blinded by them and had totally lost touch with the Spirit of the Law. Unfortunately sometimes we fall pray to this ourselves. Read it over a couple times with this issue in mind and we will continue our study together on Sunday.
